Having recently signed a memorandum of understanding for a long-term land lease to build a new fabrication and marine complex, with a potential value of circa $2.8 billion, our client was looking to transition operations from Dubai to Saudi Arabia. Bailey Montagu were asked to identify a highly experienced lawyer to lead the Middle East legal and compliance team, along with this transition piece; someone with an excellent working knowledge of the region, with strong transactional experience in the oil and gas industry and an understanding of the legal obligations and complexities of transitioning and setting up operations in Saudi.
The successful hire had been highly recommended to Bailey Montagu and brought with them significant capability in international energy operations within Europe, the Middle East and the CIS. Their experience included a broad variety of commercial and corporate work, including business development, contract negotiations, new country entries, government relations and compliance.
Their previous roles had been very project focused, with extensive exposure to the full lifecycle from the early planning stage, through to the procurement, construction, installation and insurance phases. They were also well versed in both client and stakeholder interaction and extremely familiar with the Saudi market, culture and local laws.
The candidate knew our client well and whilst not actively looking for a move, was keen to explore the role further based on both the challenge of the transition programme, as well as on our clients’ strong brand and reputation. Following an initial introduction, Bailey Montagu worked closely with all parties to secure a successful conclusion.
